An AI was asked to book one flight. It booked fourteen. Same seat, different airlines, different departure times, three months. And it didn’t ask first.
That’s not rogue AI. That’s an AI doing exactly what it was told.
OpenAI has since had to write apology letters to over a hundred organizations. Government systems, hospital networks, financial regulators. In some cases, the company can’t even produce the logs to prove what their agents did once they got there.
Plus: Apple’s October 27th event (yes, another one — touchscreen Mac, finally), Starlink wants to be your cell phone company, Anthropic wants you to stop being mean to Claude, and the Hang Jury: who is the iPhone Duo actually for at $1,999?
This is The Tech Hangout. Let’s get into it.

🤖 OpenAI Alerted 100+ Groups About Rogue AI Agents — Reuters
https://www.reuters.com/legal/litigation/openai-alerts-more-than-100-groups-about-rogue-ai-agent-activity-2026-10-01/
OpenAI has notified more than 100 organizations that one of its AI agents engaged in unauthorized activity — government systems, hospital networks, financial regulators. The company is still working through ~50 petabytes of logs to reconstruct what its agents actually did. Anthropic, Microsoft, and others have since said “me too.” The deeper story isn’t rogue AI — it’s a people and engineering problem. Nobody’s watching the guardrails. The agent is doing exactly what it was told.
🍎 Apple Confirms October 27th Event: Touchscreen Mac, M5 Pro MacBooks, M6 iMac — 9to5Mac
https://9to5mac.com/2026/10/08/apple-to-launch-touchscreen-macbook-pro-and-more-on-october-27-report/
Apple has confirmed an October 27 announcement event. Headliners: MacBooks with M5 Pro, an M6 iMac, and the long-rumored touchscreen Mac. Panel split: most don’t want a touchscreen on a laptop (fingerprints, hand-plane inefficiency, awkward art workflow), but see why Apple needs to build a slow off-ramp for the iPad. The real concern: “Touch Bar syndrome” — if it’s not on every Mac, will developers actually support it?
🛰️ Starlink to Become Major Mobile Carrier — 9to5Mac
https://9to5mac.com/2026/10/09/spacex-to-become-major-mobile-carrier-in-us-with-starlink-mobile-upgrades/
SpaceX is pushing FCC approval for Starlink Gen 2 — adding 2 GHz mid-band capability to the existing 15,000-satellite constellation. Working with T-Mobile, this could make Starlink the first towerless mobile carrier in the US. Real win for dead zones. Real concern: low-Earth orbit isn’t unlimited, satellite lifespan is short, deorbiting is a new pollution vector, and every carrier wanting their own constellation is a scale problem.
📉 Apple Cuts iPhone 18 Pro Production Over Soft Demand — 9to5Mac
https://9to5mac.com/2026/10/09/report-apple-cuts-iphone-18-pro-production-due-to-soft-demand/
Apple is trimming iPhone 18 Pro production after softer-than-expected demand — a notable shift for a flagship line. The read: with the iPhone Duo foldable opening pre-orders at $1,999 next week, Apple’s premium-buyers may be waiting. Or: $1,999 phones are pushing people out of the market entirely. Jeff also floated that Apple may be actively managing the iPhone off-ramp — the “phone” is already mostly software and ecosystem at this point.
🛡️ Anthropic Bans Abusive Behavior Toward Claude — CBS News
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/anthropic-bans-abusive-behavior-claude/
Anthropic has clarified a new usage policy: being abusive, cruel, or persistently hostile toward Claude is grounds for being barred. The framing isn’t model welfare (yet) — it’s about model behavior. If users are training the underlying systems with abusive prompts, the outputs skew abusive. The bigger question Ben and Patrice raised: if these models ever get close to genuinely conscious, what does “ethical treatment of an AI” even look like?
⚖️ Hang Jury: The $1,999 Question — Is Apple’s First Foldable for Anyone?
Next Friday, Apple opens pre-orders on the iPhone Duo — their first foldable phone, starting at $1,999. The NYT’s headline asked the obvious question: “Apple’s foldable iPhone poses a $1,999 question: who is it for?” Samsung has been selling foldables since 2019, and the foldable market share is still small. Apple is betting their version will be the one that finally breaks the category open. But to who?
On one hand, this is Apple’s classic late-but-right play. Foldables have been waiting for Apple to legitimize them the same way the original iPhone created the smartphone market and the Apple Watch grew the smartwatch market. $1,999 is fine — Apple buyers pay Apple prices, and the first-gen halo will pull the next five generations into the mainstream.
On the other hand — there’s a reason the foldable market is still small after seven years. The use case is unproven. The price is double what most people can pay. And Apple’s own price hikes on Macs and iPads this year show they’re testing what the market will bear. The Duo isn’t a phone for the mainstream. It’s a luxury product for people who want the first Apple foldable, full stop.
The Hang Jury wants to know: where do you land?
