Episode 13 – Username: admin. Password: Today.

A supermarket is just a building with fridges in it. Last weekend in France, somebody logged into hundreds of those fridges, forced them into defrost mode, and watched temperatures climb to 122Β°F. The username was “admin.” The password was today’s date. The flaw had been public for over a year. A patch existed. The hacked controllers were end-of-life since 2016 β€” they’d never get one.

Food losses: over ten million euros.

Two days later, Apple announced HomeView: a $299 screen with a camera designed to sit in every room of your house. Pre-orders are open now.

Plus: Apple quietly wrote a $25 million check to the Trump ballroom, passkeys hit an attestation trap that nobody wants to explain, and the Hang Jury: do we need to take smart home security seriously before we put these things everywhere β€” or are we all just buying the cool thing anyway?

This is The Tech Hangout. Let’s get into it.

πŸ₯Ά Hackers Heat French Supermarket Fridges to 50Β°C in “Unprecedented” Cyberattack β€” Reuters
https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/french-supermarket-chain-intermarche-hit-by-cyberattack-150-stories-targeted-2026-10-12/

Attackers logged into hundreds of supermarket refrigeration controllers across France with the username “admin” and the current date as the password β€” forcing industrial freezers into defrost mode. By morning, temps hit 50Β°C (122Β°F), some equipment caught fire. The Danfoss AK-SM 800A vulnerability had been public for over a year, but most hacked controllers were end-of-life since 2016 β€” they’d never get the patch. Food losses estimated at over ten million euros. U.S. military commissaries also took systems offline the same week over separate security incidents.

πŸ›οΈ Apple Drops $25M on the Trump Ballroom β€” Washington Post
https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2026/10/15/secret-documents-reveal-donors-behind-330-million-trumps-ballroom/

Three top donors to Trump’s $330 million White House ballroom were named β€” Apple at $25 million was one of them. Panel consensus: bad optics. Apple’s been the principled company, the privacy company, the one that fought the FBI in San Bernardino β€” now writing checks to a ballroom tearing down the East Wing. Patrice floated “promised in July” as cover; Marty countered with Deep Space Nine: “it’s easy to be a saint in paradise.” Nobody defended the donation.

🏠 Apple Gets Serious in the Home With HomeView, Apple TV, and HomePod Mini 2 β€” 9to5Mac
https://9to5mac.com/2026/10/08/apple-announces-special-event-for-october-13-welcome-home/

October event landed as a “home” story more than an “AI” story. Headliners: HomeView ($299 smart display with a camera for the kitchen counter), refreshed Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini 2, plus second-party HomeKit accessories. Marty’s review of HomeView: “it is what it is” β€” nice screen, HomeKit hub, AirPlay target, no Pencil support. Panel split on whether this is a real product category or Apple’s slow off-ramp for the iPad in the kitchen.

πŸ” Passkeys Hit an Attestation Trap β€” Michael Tsai
https://mjtsai.com/blog/2026/10/15/passkeys-attestation-trap/

Passkeys aren’t as user-controllable as we’d like because of attestation β€” sites can limit what your passkey is allowed to do based on what it claims it can do. Not all passkeys support it, so a valid passkey can fail to get into a site that requires a specific kind. Jeff’s worry: another stumbling block for adoption. Patrice’s pushback: attestation is the hardware-level proof your passkey wasn’t stolen β€” feature, not bug. Got heated, especially around the “internet echo chamber” of people who oppose attestation on principle. Tangent into the Ford Pinto-flying-a-plane analogy. Bottom line: passkeys work, but the rollout keeps being confusing until somebody writes a normal-human explainer.

βš–οΈ Hang Jury: Do We Need to Take Smart Home Security Seriously β€” Or Are We All Just Buying the Cool Thing Anyway?

Last weekend, hackers walked into the refrigeration systems of hundreds of French supermarkets. Username: “admin.” Password: today’s date. They forced the fridges into defrost mode, and by morning temperatures hit 50 degrees Celsius. Some equipment caught fire. Food losses are estimated at over ten million euros.

The flaw had been public for over a year. A patch existed. But most of the hacked controllers were so old they’d never get one β€” end-of-life since 2016.

Two days later, Apple announced HomeView: a $299 screen designed to sit in every room of your house. Pre-orders are open now.

So here’s the question. Do we need to take smart home security seriously before we put these things everywhere? Or is the security story just noise, and we’re all buying the cool thing anyway?

Because honestly β€” I think we are. Marty, Ben β€” am I wrong?
